Downcross House - Step inside a Beautiful Rustic Country Cottage B&B

Welsch country cottage

Recently whilst casting my votes for the UK Interior Awards I discovered Downcross House. This beautiful cottage home, which is available for rent on Air BnB, is a contender in the Awards for the Best B&B Interior. Needless to say it got my vote!

I love discovering new places to visit and have a huge hit list of cities, hotels, restaurants and other attractions that I would like to see one day. Previously on the blog we’ve featured some gorgeous country homes and artists houses which I’ve found on Air BnB. Read on as I have another Air BnB treat in store for you here.

Downcross House is a beautiful characterful cottage in Wales which is definitely going on my hit list. As I looked over the pictures over the pictures I was intrigued to discover more so I got in touch with the owner.

The cottage is owned by Anwen who also created the gorgeous interiors. The style is a mix of old and new. A Scandinavian rustic style with plenty of textures added from textiles and natural materials such as wood, baskets and plants.

Let’s step through the door and take a look at more of these lovely rooms.

The house was built in the 15th Century and just oozes character - ‘“ I don’t think there is a straight wall in the house,” says owner Anwen. The 15th Century grade II listed Welsh Long House is packed with original features which include medieval and Tudor arches and ceilings, fireplaces and a stone spiral staircase.

The colour palette for the rooms is a classic Scandinavian style. Whites complement the warm woods and rustic brick and stone which appears throughout the building. Colour is in pared down tones of black, grey and blues to contrast with the mainly white walls.

A huge inglenook fireplace is always a lovely feature for a country cottage. I can imagine cosy evenings with the fire blazing during the winter months.

There is a clever mix of old and new in the home. For example in the living room an antique chair sits next to a modern furniture staple - a practical white Ikea chest of drawers.

In the bedroom a rustic metal bed contrasts with the white walls. The bed is beautifully dressed in relaxed and cosy looking grey and white bedding.

A clever mix of old and new works well within the colour palette that is used across the rooms. Here an antique table and chest of drawers sit perfectly alongside more modern mid-century style black string shelves on the wall.

The pared back colour palette is consistent throughout the cottage. Contrasting black of the piano sits against a background of wood and white with a touch of colour added from the collection of plants.

In the bathroom I love the old roll top bath and bamboo towel ladder. An interesting collection of vases and plants adds character to the room.

Tongue and groove panels are a traditional style for cottage doors. Custom built wooden shelving in with panelled doors fits cosily in between the thick stone walls which are covered with a rough hewn plaster.

I spy some vinyl in the corner and there are musical instruments all around the house. It looks like the owners are definitely music fans!

I love the textures of the old walls. The colour choice here for the woodwork really complements the natural woods and warm whites of the wall.

The cottages just oozes history with it's rustic stone walls which are so beautifully complemented with the laid back Scandi Boho decor. This lovely home is definitely on my holiday hit list. If you'd like to visit Downcross House it is available for rent on Air BnB.
