Create Perfect Colour Wheel: The Terracotta Colour Trend

Terracotta colour trend blog

So the terracotta colour trend is tipped as a big one for 2018. According to Pinterest’s annual trend report, searches on terracotta are up. Pantone also featured the terracotta like colour Blooming Dahlia in both their New York and London Fashion Colour Trend Reports. I might be showing my age here but I do remember terracotta walls as a regular feature of 90’s makeover programmes. The feeling that I had when I first heard about the trend was how are we possibly going to revive this one?

However once I started looking at the influences coming through there are some really pleasing interiors as well as products out there really making the most of this trend.

Made from a natural clay it’s use around the world as a building material dates back to ancient Chinese dynasties. Natural with earthy organic tones, the dusky pink of the terracotta colour has a long association with the architecture and is seen everywhere from the mediterranean and middle east to Mexico.

The terracotta colour trend in your home

The terracotta colour that we are seeing this time around is lighter than before. Less like the brick shades and more of a natural fusion between two of most recent colour trends blush pink and copper. These colours add a warm natural tone to your home and work well with off whites, reds, woods and metallics.

Terracotta Walls and floors

It is a rustic colour and one of the easiest ways to make the most of it is by using the material itself. Terracotta tiles come in many styles of finish, shape and colour. I love the subtle warm pink of these traditional terracotta tiles teamed with the shades of white and gold accents in this kitchen

To get a terracotta colour on the walls, exposed brick and it’s natural clay colour add rustic tones without the broad sweep of a paintbrush and solid wall of colour. The varying tones of the wall in this kitchen add interest and a rustic feel to a room full of otherwise smooth and sleek surfaces.

Terracotta is a colour that works well in layers. If you are not a natural lover of colour I wouldn’t recommend putting the terracotta colour straight on to your walls as it may be overwhelming. This room by Dulux has very cleverly blended the colour into the white wall and then accessorised with more pink shades. The whites and natural woods match beautifully with the colours.

Terracotta furniture and accessories

Layering the colour into your existing scheme by changing items of furniture, accessories and textiles is the quickest way to make the most of the terracotta colour trend in your home. Also as trends come and go cheaper accessories like bedding and cushions can easily be replaced when you fancy a change.

Placing a terracotta sofa is a tricky one but it’s been beautifully done here. Balanced with a lighter shade on the walls, neutral furnishings and wood and brass accents in the lighting

Woven rugs from the middle east, turkey and asia often have terracottas, reds and browns in their colour ways. I love the idea of replacing a traditional bath mat with this beautiful Kelim.

In this sleek apartment the hand crafted rug and rustic woods soften the smooth white and grey surfaces.
